by Jonathan Gramling The Madison chapter of the Association of Indians in America (AIA) has some very lofty standards. Many of its members have succeeded and excelled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in government, and in private business. From the moment that Aarushi Agni sang the national anthems of India and the United States, excellence was very much on display at AIA's annual banquet April 25 at the Sheraton Hotel. The banquet was officiated by Dr. Gurdip Brar, the 2004 AIA president. Meenakshi Ganesan, the artistic director of the Kalaanjali School of Dance & Music, performed a graceful, traditional Indian celebration dance.
And then, after a fine Indian buffet dinner, awards were given to outstanding students and community members. The following high school students were honored: Paresh Aggarwal, Memorial High School; Manprit Brar, Middleton High School; Yadwinderpal Ghotra, Middleton High School; and Maria Din, Edgewood High School. Suvai Gunasekaran was recognized for her achievements as a Young Scholar Award winner from WCATY, and participation in the Wisconsin Geography Bee and Letters about Literature. Dr. Suresh Chandra has served in the Department of Opthalmology at UW Hospitals and Clinics for over 30 years. Through "Combat Blindness Foundation," which he founded in 1984, over 76,000 cataract and other eye surgeries have been performed and 452,984 patients have been examined. Dr. Chandra has published over 150 papers and abstracts, and has received 14 honors and awards. Jonathan Gramling, the editor of The Madison Times Weekly Newspaper, was honored for his thirty-year involvement in civil rights. Gramling worked at the Urban League of Greater Madison for 12 years and has volunteered with many community organizations including the NAACP-Madison Branch. He has received numerous awards including a Community Service Award from the Wisconsin Organization for Asian Americans. Dr. Gurwathan Miranpuri is a member of the faculty of the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Presently, Miranpuri is a senior scientist at the medical school's Department of Neurological Surgery where he is investigating mechanisms of spinal cord injury. He has also introduced the Punjabi cultural aspects of Bhangra dance to the Indian community in Madison. Miranpuri is also a board member of the American Medical Hospital, s medical mission serving underprivileged communities in Madison. Dr. Vinod Shah received a Lifetime Achievement Award from AIA. He is a senior scientist emeritus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His scientific career was highlighted by a series of major breakthroughs in the subfield of biochemistry concerning nitrogen fixation. To date, Shah has published nearly 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. He was given a UW Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research, the highest award for scientists at the university.
