Dances from the Himalayas
The
Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts thrilled Madisonians May
26 at the Wisconsin Union when they presented “Dances from the
Roof of the World,” plus a number of humorous skits that made
the audience roar in laughter. The colorful and beautiful costumes,
pretty faces, skilled dancing, and ethnic musical instruments
and props seemed to shout to the world, “Hey, we are Tibetans,
proud of our history, our culture, and ourselves!” Their struggle
for independence from China since the ‘50s is well- known, as
the Dalai Lama, their spiritual and government leader, evacuated
to India and set up a provisional government there. While the
Institute’s performances are always cheerful and colorful, sometimes
naughty and humorous, they have only one goal in mind: to foster
and develop an appreciation of the Tibetan culture and share
it with the Tibetan youth and all the people of the world. —Heidi
