Ruben Navarrette Jr., a columnist and editorial board member for the Dallas Morning News, will speak to the Madison Civics Club at a luncheon meeting Saturday, Jan. 17. Navarrette will share insights on immigration policies, trade, the current relationship between Mexico and the United States, and their effects on economic justice. Shabazz High School students are holding curriculum training about Mound Bayou, Miss., for Madison teachers and community members. Madison Community Co-op is offering 10 $1,000 grants to organizations or groups that work with students in grades preschool to 12 in the Madison Metropolitan School District area. Projects using grant money must foster leadership and community, serve low-income and/or minority students, or provide for largely unmet needs of students. Application deadline is Thursday, Jan. 15. The Madison Children’s Museum’s Preschool Spanish Club offers an informal, child-friendly class setting that introduces children ages 3-5 to new languages through games, songs, and activities. A public forum, “Free Trade and Military Interventionism,” will be held Sunday, Jan. 11, 1-3 p.m. in the main auditorium of First Unitarian Society, 900 University Bay Drive. The forum, which will include Ed Garvey, Donna Vukelich, and other speakers, has been organized in response to Oliver North’s visit to Madison on Jan. 13 and 14 as the keynote speaker at the “Madison Business Day” event sponsored by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC). There will also be a peaceful demonstration to protest North’s presence Tuesday, Jan. 13, 7-8 p.m. outside the Madison Club, at the corner of East Wilson Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard., where the WMC is holding a fund-raising dinner in honor of North.
