VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • United Way

The United Way Volunteer Center has information on hundreds of volunteer opportunities in Dane County, including the following:

• Independent Living is seeking Friendly Visiting Volunteers. Individuals will be matched with older adults with whom they can enjoy a weekly two-hour visit.

• Neighborhood House Community Center is in need of a volunteer to help update mailing lists. This duty includes: researching Greenbush neighborhood addresses, updating the current mailing list, and assisting in the creation of a new database and mailing list.

• The Ferret Nook is in need of donated baby toys as well as help cleaning cages, clipping nails, and playing with ferrets.  Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Briarpatch

Help with homelessness in your community by becoming a Street Outreach volunteer and accompanying trained staff into the communities where runaway, homeless, and throwaway youth gather. For more information or an application, call Rachel O'Leary, 251-6211, or e-mail volcoor@brpatch.org.

  • MAFAAC conference

Volunteers are needed to help plan and organize MAFAAC's second annual conference on "Race and Education: Closing the Achievement Gap,"scheduled for Saturday, April 24, at Wright Middle School. The keynote speaker will be Julie Kailin, UW-Milwaukee professor of education and author of "Anti-Racist Education: From Theory to Practice."
