  • King Recognition award

Nomination forms for the 2004 Dane County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition award are now available online at www.co.dane.wi.us.   • ICWJ Clergy-Labor Luncheon

Members of labor and faith-based organizations and community members are invited to the third annual Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice Clergy-Labor Luncheon Wednesday, Jan. 28, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Lake Edge Lutheran Church, 4032 Monona Drive. This year's theme is corporate social responsibility and worker justice. The cost is $20, or $35 for the luncheon and a one-year membership in the ICWJ.   • Civics Club luncheon

Ruben Navarrette Jr., a columnist and editorial board member for the Dallas Morning News, will speak to the Madison Civics Club at a luncheon meeting Saturday, Jan. 17. Navarrette will share insights on immigration policies, trade, the current relationship between Mexico and the United States, and their effects on economic justice.   • Steering Committee meeting

The next meeting of the North Fish Hatchery Road Steering Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 21, 7:30-9:00 a.m. at the Fitchburg City Hall, 5520 Lacy Rd.   • Education grants available

Madison Community Co-op is offering 10 $1,000 grants to organizations or groups that work with students in grades preschool to 12 in the Madison Metropolitan School District area. Projects using grant money must foster leadership and community or serve low-income and/or minority students or provide for largely unmet needs of students.

  • MAFAAC conference

  • Free Trade and Military Interventionism

A public forum, “Free Trade and Military Interventionism,” will be held Sunday, Jan. 11, 1-3 p.m. in the main auditorium of First Unitarian Society, 900 University Bay Dr.

The forum, which will include Ed Garvey, Donna Vukelich, and other speakers, has been organized in response to Oliver North’s visit to Madison on Jan. 13 and 14 to be the keynote speaker at the “Madison Business Day” event sponsored by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC).    

There will also be a peaceful demonstration to protest North’s presence Tuesday, Jan. 13, 7-8 p.m. outside the Madison Club, at the corner of E. Wilson St. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., where the WMC is holding a fundraising dinner in honor of North.

  • NAMI at Church Women United

Catherine Beilman, co-chair of the Public Policy Committee for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) will speak  at the Church Women United forum on Jan. 9, at Dale Heights Presbyterian Church, 5501 University Ave.

  • RCD kickoff meeting

The Town and Country Resource Conservation and Development (RCD), a new organization dedicated to the health of southeastern Wisconsin’s economy, people, and environment, will hold its kickoff meeting Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Oconomowoc Public Library, 200 South St., Oconomowoc.   • Mock interviewers

Common Wealth Development’s Youth-Business Mentoring Program is in the process of preparing for several new pre-employment trainings. Mock interviewers are needed to act as managers/supervisors, businesses owners and to interview students as if the student was actually interviewing for a job. Volunteers generally interview two or three students per training and are needed for:

• Shabazz High School, 1601 N. Sherman Ave., Thursday, Jan. 8, 12:10-1:30 p.m.

• Sennett Middle School, 502 Pflaum Road, Thursday, Jan. 15th 10:50 a.m.-12:25 p.m.; and Thursday, Feb. 5, 9:45-11 a.m.; Thursday, March 4, 10:50 a.m.-12:25 p.m.

• East High School, 2222 E. Washington Ave., Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1:15-2:30 p.m.

  • Hockey vs. Cancer  

The Inaugural Chris McHugh Memorial Holiday Hockey Tournament will take place at Hartmeyer Ice Arena, 1834 Commercial Ave., Friday, Jan. 2 and Saturday, Jan. 3. The event is intended to honor the memory of Chris McHugh and to help fund cancer research.   Tickets will be available at the door for $4 per game.   • By Youth For Youth

By Youth For Youth (BYFY), an organization made up of high school students, is accepting proposals for the $26,350 the group will be allocating next year. BYFY will select creative student and youth-led initiatives in Dane County that strive to improve schools and communities.   • Gates scholarship

About two weeks remain until the deadline for the 2004-2005 Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) award, which is funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Students (nominees), nominators, and recommenders are encouraged to apply online or to download nomination materials on the GMS Web site www.gmsp.org.  All completed nomination materials must be postmarked or submitted online no later than Jan. 16.
