MADISON — Wisconsin Community Fund and the Verna Hill-Dorothy Shannon Fund named Ricardo Gonzales the 2004 Community Change Maker. He was honored at the seventh annual Cardinal Bar celebration Dec. 2.

A native of Cuba, Gonzales came to the U.S. with his family in 1960 at age 13. After graduating from college, he moved to Wisconsin in 1972, where he became the first Latino to run for the Wisconsin state Assembly.

Gonzales served as affirmative action officer in the state of Wisconsin Bureau of Personnel and as a volunteer counselor at the Gay Center on State Street. He opened the Cardinal Bar in 1974 as a gay bar to bring public attention to Madison’s gay community. Since then, the Cardinal Bar has broadened its clientele and earned a reputation as a valuable community institution by offering its space to numerous organizations for meetings and fund-raising events.

Gonzales also founded the Madison-Camaguey, Cuba, Sister City Association and has since dedicated his time and energy to fostering understanding and improvement of relations between his homeland and the U.S. — Wisconsin Community Fund
