The Madison Senior Center and the South Madison Coalition for the Elderly will sponsor a meal on Thursday, Dec. 25, at the Senior Center, 330 W. Mifflin St. Doors will open at 11 a.m. for a social hour with hors d'oeuvres. The meal, which features roast turkey and all the trimmings, will be served at noon. Make a reservation by calling 251-8405 no later than noon Thursday, Dec. 18.
The Madison Area Family Advisory/Advocacy Council (MAFAAC), a nonprofit multicultural organization, will host a spaghetti dinner and fund-raiser 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 at St. Mark’s Church, 605 Spruce St. Enjoy good food and conversation and celebrate MAFAAC’s first anniversary. Suggested donation is $10, or $15 per family.
Search for signs of animal activity out in the wintry woods and meadows at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC), 300 Femrite Drive in Monona, Sunday, Jan. 11. Naturalist Sue Denholm will share the survival strategies of plants and animals that help them endure Wisconsin winters in a new program, "Keeping Warm in the Winter Woods." Afterward, we will warm up in the Nature Center's replica of Aldo Leopold's shack with a hot beverage by the fire and a rousing round of "Happy Birthday" to Leopold himself, who was born 118 years ago. An informal brown-bag lunch-and-lecture series will be held the first and third Tuesdays of every month through November at the Wisconsin Historical Museum on the Square, 30 N. Carroll Street The next event, “Struggle For Justice: The Migrant Farm Worker Labor Movement Programs,” will be held Jan. 20 at 12:15 p.m. Visitors are invited to bring a lunch and enjoy a program of historical perspective. Suggested donation is $2 per person.

About one month remains until the deadline for the 2004 - 2005 Gates Millennium Scholars award, funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The award was established in 1999 to provide outstanding Asian Pacific Islander Americans, African Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and Hispanic Americans with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in all discipline areas. Sponsored by Humana Inc., Let Happiness Ring is a program providing free telephone time for senior citizens during the holidays. Special phone lines are installed at area senior centers, and seniors are invited to make free long distance calls within the continental United States. Three phones will be set up in the Green Bay area, and there will be seven in and around Madison, including at the Colonial Club Senior Center, Sun Prairie; the Fitchburg Senior Center; the Madison Senior Center; the Middleton Senior Center; the Monona Senior Center; the Oregon Area Senior Center; and the Westside Coalition for the Aging. The next national test date for the ACT (American College Testing) assessment is Feb. 7. College-bound students should register by the Jan. 2 postmark deadline. To promote workplace equality, Business and Professional Women of Madison (BPW) awards scholarships to individuals pursuing higher education in Dane County. In spring 2004, scholarships of $1,000 or more per recipient will be awarded for the fall 2004 semester. Applicants must have a record of academic performance balanced with community involvement, nonacademic interests, and experiences; be accepted by a technical college, trade school, or university in Dane County; be attending school in fall 2004 at the above institution; be pursuing additional education to enter, advance, or change a career; have demonstrated the ability to overcome challenges; and must demonstrate financial need. Applications and two letters of recommendation from nonrelatives must be postmarked by Feb. 27, 2004. Oral interviews for finalists will be held in early March, and scholarship recipients will be announced by March 31.
