  • 7th Annual Public Health Awards

The Madison Dept. of Public Health and the Dane County Human Services Dept.’s Public Health Division will recognize 8 outstanding people and organizations for their important contributions to public health at the 2004 Public Health Awards ceremony April 5, 1:30 p.m. at the Warner Park Community Center. Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz & Dane County Exec. Kathleen Falk will present the awards. For more information, call 294-5303/242-6424.

  • Who's New in Madison

Who's New in Madison, a club for newcomers to the Madison area, will hold its monthly luncheon Thursday, April 8, at the Lake Windsor Country Club, 4628 Golf Road, Windsor, with cocktails at 11:30 a.m. and lunch at noon. The cost of the luncheon is $14.50, and reservations should be made with Debbie Wise, 662-0483.

  • Pancake breakfast

 "Pancakes for the People," a benefit breakfest for the Madison-Arcatao Sister Cities Project, will be held Sunday, April 4, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in St. Mark’s Church fellowship hall, 605 Spruce St. A donation of $4 for adults and $2.50 for children under 12 is requested.

  • “Children As Consumers”

Karin Ekström, director of the Center for Consumer Science in Göteborg, Sweden, will speak on  "Children as Consumers in Commercial Cultures: Victims or competent consumers?" Thursday, April 15, 4 p.m. in Room 178 of the School of Human Ecology, 1300 Linden St. on the University of Wisconsin campus. Ekström is active in linking research to policy regarding consumer rights, especially for children and their families. Her research explores topics related to children's influence on family decision making and commercial marketing to children.

  • Continuing Education Grant

UW-Madison resident-tuition grants for part-time study are available for adult students who have been away from school. Grants are based on financial need and clear goal. Application for UW admission must be made prior to applying for the grant. Priority deadline for summer 2004 is May 1. For more information, call 263-6960.

  • Walk

The public is invited to help The Dairyland Walkers initiate a new walk for 2004 at Hoyt Park, 3902 Regent St., Saturday, April 3, 10 a.m. The walk will be 6.2 miles (10K) in length and will go through the park, the University Heights area, Camp Randall, Forest Hill Cemetery, etc. The cost will be $3 for volkssporters desiring "credit" for the walk; otherwise, it is free and open to the public.   • Foster care meetings

Dane County Foster Care is having two informational meetings at the Northport Office of Dane County Human Services, 1202 Northport Drive, Room 110 Monday, April 5, and Tuesday, May 4, 7 p.m.

  • LGBT People of Color group

The LGBT People of Color group will meet biweekly on Sundays from 5-7 p.m. starting in April at the Outreach Community Center, 600 Williamson St., Suite P-1.

This drop-in discussion, social, and support group will address the issues an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender) person of color faces every day. People of African American, Latino, Native American, Asian, Indian, Arabic, and multicultural descent are particularly encouraged to participate.   • Cancer-research study

The UW-Madison Center for Health Systems Research and Analysis is conducting a research study of family-caregiver needs during cancer illness. The study is currently looking for adults who are or were the main person assisting in the care and support of a loved one with cancer. Participants will receive $20 for completing the survey.   • Speaker on the Cuban 5

Andres Gomez, a Cuban American from Miami who supports the Cuban revolution and is against the U.S.-imposed blockade and travel restrictions, will discuss the case of the Cuban 5 Wednesday, April 7, 7 p.m. in Lowell Hall, 610 Langdon St. For more information, call 238-1266.

  • System changes for CAC

Beginning in April, households in Dane County seeking financial support from Community Action Coalition (CAC) for South Central Wisconsin to avoid eviction and/or enter a new apartment will no longer have to wait for the “call-in days” to apply. Individuals seeking assistance can speak to an intake worker by calling or coming to the CAC offices at 1717 N. Stoughton Road. Spanish-language intake will be available every Wednesday morning, 8 a.m.-12 noon.

  • Lenten services

"A Closer Walk," the seventh in a series of Lenten services, will be held Wednesday, April 7, 7 p.m. at Fountain of Life Family Worship, 633 W. Badger Road. The speaker will be Rev. Melva Bishop.

  • Tax help

Now through April 15, AARP is offering a free program to help taxpayers prepare federal and state income-tax returns. Almost 32,000 volunteers have been trained and certified in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service to perform these services.
